Studies on Microbiological Monitoring for Laboratory Animals in Korea ¥°. Investigation on Pathogens of Bacterial, Mycoplasmal and Viral infections in Conventionally Fed Mice and Antibiotic Susceptibility of the Isolates

Abstract
Sixteen kinds of infections caused by bacteria and mycoplasma to 72 mice conventionally fed in 3 institutes of Korea were investigated by microbiological examinations, and 5 kinds at infections of the above were investigated by serological methods such as agglutination(Aggl) test, hemagglutination inhibition(HI) test, complement fixation(CF) test and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA), by which 6 kinds of viral infections were also investigated. On the other hand, susceptibilities to 25 kinds of antibiotics antibiotics were for the pathogens isolated from several body sites of the above animals. The results were as follows :
1. Stapbylococcus aureus was isolated 0 to 30% from nasal cavities but not from ceca, and the isolates were resistant to only 2 kinds of antibiotics of colistin and nalidixic acid, but showed 8 high and 15 intermediate susceptibilities to the other 23 kinds of antibiotics.
2. Pseudamonas aeruginosa was isolated 0 to 30% from ceca and the isolates wire resistant to 15 kids and doubtful to 3 kinds of antibiotics, but showed low and intermediate susceptibilities to the other 7 kinds.
3. In the isolation of Salmonella enteritidis, the group D©û Salmonella spp. was isolated 0 to 9.4% from mesenteric lymph nodes and 3% from spleens, respectively, but Salmonella typhimurium was not isolated from the above body sites, and its antibody could not be detected from mice by Agg test. The group D©û Salmonella spp. was resistant to 9 kinds of antibiotics but showed generally law to high susceptibilities to all the other 15 kinds.
4. Escherichia eoli o115 a, c;K(B) was isolated 30% to 41% from ceca, 13% from mesenteric lymph nodes, and the isolates were resistant to t3 kinds of antibiotics except bacitracin showing doubtful susceptibility, but showed generally low to high susceptibilities to all the other 14 kinds.
5. Citrobacter freundii was isolated 0 to 20% from ceca and the isolates were resistant to 8 kinds of antibiotics but showed only low susceptibilities ea the other 12 kinds exept 5 kinds not examined.
6. Pasteurella pneumotropica was isolated 20 to 40% from pharynxes, 72% from Tracheas and 1.3% from lungs. respectively, and the isolates were resistant to 8 kinds of antibiotics except cefametazol showing doubtful susceptibility but showed generally low to high susceptibilities to, all the other 15 kinds.
7. Corynebacrerium kutscheri was isolated 0 to 50% from ceca and its antibody could be detected 3.4 to 7.5% from mice by Aggl test, and the isolates were resistant to only 3 kinds of doxacillin, sulpenicillin and nalidixic acid but showed generally low to high susceptibilities to all the other 21 kinds.
8. Mycoplasma pulmonis was isolated 70 to 80% from joint of limbs, and its antibody could also be detected 83 to 100% from mice by ELISA, while Mycoplasma arthritidis and Mycoplasma neurolyticum were not isolated franc arty of the above body sites. The isolates were resistant to 11 kinds and doubtful to 3 kinds of antibiatics, but showed 7 high and 3 low susceptibilities to the other 11 kinds.
9. Bacillus piliformis was impossible to be cultured, therefore serological methods of CF test and ELISA were applied for the antibody detection but its antibody could not he detected by any of them.
10. Four kinds of pathogens such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus zooepidemicus, Pasteurella multocida and Bordetella bronchiseptica were examined for isolation from mice but none was isolated from nasal cavities, tracheas and lungs as the references indicated. Bordetella bronchiseptica showed negative in antibody detection by Aggl test.
11. Antibodies of Hemagglutinating virus of Japan, Mouse hepatitis virus could be detected by ELISA 72%, 90%, 52%, from trice, respectively, while those of Hemagglutinating virus of Japan could not be detected by CF test.
12. Antibodies Murine adenovirus and Reovirus type 3 could rat be detected by CF test, and neither could be those of Ectromelia virus by HI test.
